Episode 19: Housing, not Hoarding

What could our city be if we stopped looking at housing as a commodity to be exploited?

Caryma Sa’d is a lawyer, cultural commentator and cartoon creator who looks at Toronto with a keen observer’s eye, noticing opportunities and injustice and giving her perspective regularly to media and social media followers alike. Her legal practice covers criminal, landlord/tenant law and the rapidly emerging field of cannabis. Her experience with housing, both as a resident and a lawyer, informs her views on homelessness and tenant rights. She doesn’t push simplistic one size fit all solutions, but instead focusses on how many of our housing related problems could be eliminated if our society saw housing as a right instead of an investment opportunity.

Caryma and I only touch on it briefly in this podcast, but we differ markedly in how we speak and feel about protests against COVID-19 policy, something that has over the past two years caused fractures in personal and professional relationships for many in our city. I hope our conversation and understanding around housing, compassion, and the benefit of remaining open will inspire others to build bridges to those on the other side of their own ideological divides.
